Production Process: The production process of sulfuric acid is mainly carried out through the contact process, which is developed for large-scale production. The process starts with the production of sulfur dioxide (SO2). This is done either by burning sulfur in air or by treating sulfur-containing ores and non-ferrous metal smelting off-gases with roasting. The produced sulfur diox🍷ide gas is then purified and dried to remove dust, moisture, and impurities that can be toxic to the catalyst in the next step.
The next step involves passing the purified sulfur dioxide gas through a catalytic converter, where the gas is oxidized to sulfur trioxide (SO3). This process is carried out in the presence of a vanadium pentoxide catalyst at a controlled temperature. The reaction is exothermic, and the heat produced is often recovered and reused in the plant. Sulfur trioxide is not absorbed in water because the reaction is highly exothermic and produces acid mist. Instead, it is absorbed in concentrated sulfuric acid to produce oleum (fuming sulfuric acid). This oleum is then diluted with water or diluted sulfuric acid to produce sulfuric acid of the desired concentration, which is usually 98%. The final stages involve cooling, storage, and quality checks, where the strength of the acid, purity, and physical characteristics are ascertained.
